Our Story

The Moonlite Drive-In Theatre, located at 17555 Lee Highway in Abingdon, Virginia, is a cherished landmark that first opened its gates on June 9, 1949. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2007. After closing in 2013 and a brief reopening in 2016, the theatre faced challenges that led to its closure once more.

In 2024, the Moonlite found new life when it was purchased by the Blevins and Crusenberry families with plans to revitalize the venue to continue its legacy as a community gathering spot.  They are deeply committed to restoring the theatre's mid-century charm. Their vision includes not only screening new release and classic films but also hosting live music, plays, car shows, craft and vendor markets, and family-friendly activities. The venue will also be available for private rentals.  Plans are underway to reintroduce a playground to enhance the visitor experience.

The revitalization efforts have garnered strong community support, highlighted by a successful concert featuring country music star Clint Black during the 2024 Virginia Highlands Festival, which also marked the theatre's 75th anniversary. As restoration progresses, the Moonlite Drive-In is poised to once again become a vibrant cultural hub in Southwest Virginia.
